There are various ways to cook potatoes, from grilling, frying, to steaming. Potatoes can also be made into delicious dishes that are combined with other food ingredients to create a variety of delicious potato dishes. Well, one of the potato dishes that is often found in Indonesia is potato cakes. Potato cakes are made from potatoes that have been mashed after the potatoes have been fried or steamed. Potato cakes can be consumed as a side dish with rice or as a delicious snack. Follow the steps below to make patties:

Ingredients:

  • 3 potatoes

  • 1 stalk of spring onions

  • 1 stalk of celery leaves

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp of all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 tsp of salt

  • 1/2 tsp of sugar

  • 1 tbsp of fried onions

  • 1 tsp of pepper powder

  • 1 tbsp of chicken bouillon powder

  • Cooking oil, to fry

Cooking instructions:

  1. Start by thoroughly washing the potatoes under running water to ensure they are clean. Since potatoes grow underground, they tend to have dirt clinging to them.

  2. Peel the potatoes completely, making sure there are no traces of skin left.

  3. Cut the potatoes into small pieces. This step aids in frying them evenly and ensures they become soft and tender. You can follow the suggested method for cutting, or adjust according to your preference.

  1. Wash the spring onions and celery leaves meticulously under cold water. Before washing, trim and discard the root ends of the spring onions to remove any remaining dirt.

  2. Slice the spring onions and celery leaves thinly, as they will be mixed into the potato mixture later on.

  1. Next, prepare and heat the oil in a frying pan.

  2. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the potatoes and fry them over medium heat until they are cooked through and golden brown.

  1. Drain the fried potatoes briefly on paper towels to remove excess oil, then transfer them to a bowl to be mashed.

  2. While the potatoes are still hot, mash them until they are completely smooth and lump-free.

  1. Once the potatoes are mashed, add the remaining ingredients such as all-purpose flour, chicken bouillon powder, pepper powder, salt, sugar, fried onions, and the sliced spring onions and celery leaves according to taste. Since all-purpose flour acts as a binding agent, there's no need to add eggs to the potato mixture.

  1. Mix the potato mixture thoroughly until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.

  1. Shape the potato mixture into flat, round patties. Repeat this step until all the mixture is used. Remember to wash your hands before handling the mixture to maintain hygiene, or you can use plastic gloves.

  1. Crack the eggs into a separate bowl and beat them until well combined.

  2. Heat oil in a frying pan.

  3. Dip each shaped potato patty into the beaten eggs, ensuring they are fully coated, then place them into the hot oil in the frying pan. Fry the patties until they are golden brown on both sides.

  1. Once cooked, drain the fried potato patties briefly on paper towels.

  2. Serve the golden-brown fried potato patties hot as a delightful snack or alongside warm rice as a tasty side dish. Enjoy!
